Dr.Shri Gopal Kabra A man of medicine, laws and letters and a medical science journalist to boot – he has made
lasting impact in each of them. He graduated from R G Kar medical College, Calcutta, in 1961
with college Gold Medal in Medicine and then changed over to surgery.
He came to Rajasthan in 1963. Denied the opportunity to do MS in Surgery, he did first MSc
(Anatomy) and MS (Anatomy) and later when permitted did his MS in General Surgery.
He had a 6 year stint as Surgeon and Research Director at the SDM Hospital, Jaipur, where,
with Dr.P.K.Sethi he established Jaipur Foot center and did original work on Carbon Fiber
Orthoses and Cadaveric Bone Jaipur Foot, which received international acclaim.
The 100 bed, totally free, hospice for terminal cancer patients at SDM Hospital, Jaipur, was
established by him and supervised for over a decade.
After retirement he changed over to law and practiced law for 4 years and filed number of public
interest litigations and taught medicine to lawyers and judges and law to medical graduates.
He is an accomplished writer and a free-lance medical science journalist with 30 books and over
500 articles, both in Hindi and English, to his credit.
He received the nation's highest award for Science Writing in Hindi and several other literary
awards.
At 86 he is still active and working as Director Legal Affairs and Medical Audit at SDM
Hospital, Jaipur. He is a visiting faculty for Administrative Staff College, Hyderabad.
He joined as Director Clinical Services at Bhagwan Mahavir Cancer Hospital, Jaipur, where he
has initiated projects for free treatment of 3 childhood blood cancers.
