The tragic suicide of Atul Subhash, an AI engineer, on December 9th has
sparked heated debates across the country over the abuse of various legal
provisions, particularly Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code. The arguments
concerning false accusations made against men and in-laws during divorce and
maintenance hearings have been reignited by Atul's suicide.
Suicide Case of Atul Subhash
- Atul Subhash, who worked for a private company in Bangaluru, killed himself while leaving a thorough 24-page note detailing the years of emotional pain he endured as a result of marital issues.
- Along with his wife and her family, the accused has also accused a Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, Family Court judge of corruption, extortion, and harassment.
- A FIR has been filed under Sections 108 and 3(5) of the BNS in response to a complaint made by the accused's brother, Bikas Kumar, at the Marathahalli Police Station in Bangaluru. Among the defendants are the wife Nikita Singhania, mother-in-law Nisha Singhania, brother-in-law Anurag Singhania, and wife's uncle Sushil Singhania.
- On Monday, the deceased's body was discovered at his home in Manjunath Layout, with a sign that said, "Justice is due."
- On Rumble, the victim produced an 80-minute video in which he gave an explanation of his choice.
- "I feel that I should kill myself because the money I earn is making my enemies stronger," Atul said in his video. "I shall be destroyed with that same money, and the cycle will continue."
- In 2019, the pair tied the knot and welcomed a son the following year.
- The Jaunpur Family Court in Uttar Pradesh ordered Atul to provide the child with support of Rs 40,000 per month in July, with the wife to receive no compensation.
- The deceased's relatives claim that they were harassed by demands for money; at first, they wanted Rs 40,000 per month, which was eventually raised to Rs 1 lakh.
Arrests in the Case
- Nikita Singhania, the wife, was arrested in Gurugram, Haryana, and transferred to Bengaluru for processing, while the mother and brother of the wife were apprehended by the police in Allahabad.
- The family members had spent 14 days in judicial prison at Parappana Agrahara's Central Prison.
- The Allahabad High Court granted bail to Sushil Singhania, the over 70-year-old accused in the FIR, and is currently looking into his involvement in the killing.
Nikita Singhania, the wife, refuted in her statement that her husband had
harassed her in the suicide letter. She stated during questioning that she and
her husband had been apart for nearly three years.
