Tale Of Patriarchy And Rape Culture

The patriarchal system, which dates back thousands of years and favours men over women, men have always had a dominant role in society.Males are clearly given more privileges and freedoms under patriarchal beliefs, which gives them a noticeable advantage over other genders. Along with the increased freedom and rights come the possibility of power abuse and the introduction of patriarchal ideology.

The patriarchy has always been a contributory factor in rape culture where men who rape seeks a sense of power, but also use their power to get sex from women, sometimes under conditions that are not legally defined as rape involve varying levels of control and coercion. The culture of rape is also influenced by a number of other elements, including victim blaming, pornography, societal aspects, characterize of victim and more.

Rape culture in India

Rape culture in India may be a byproduct of patriarchy, particularly in rural communities where gender disparity is prevalent. These communities consider that women should be kept within four walls and should solely perform household activities, where sometimes women is also subjected to cruelty.

Unfortunately we exist in a society where character of a women is judged by her clothes, where a independent women is called characterless.Does such an ideology truly have a place in a civilized society?

Victim blaming

The culture of victim blaming is deeply ingrained, with society viewing victims are held responsible as though they were responsible for the act themselves.A rape victim is ultimately evaluated based on things like "what she was wearing," "why she was out at night," and "it might be her fault."The world is gradually turning into an outrageous place where women can live with safety, freedom, and dignity.

All men are rapist?

A question arises, "Not every men is a rapist but why always a men."

Indeed every men is not a rapist, majority of men don't rape. The observation of various researches concluded that men who commits rape actually don't have any feeling of guilt even after their conviction. There are various psychological aspects which leads to commission of such offence, Men who actually rape may be classified as:
  • Men who do not rape but would be willing to rape if they were sure that they would not be punished.
  • Men who do not rape but will not intervene when another man rapes.
  • Men who do not rape but buy sex with a woman who is likely to be raped in the context of prostitution, who was trafficked for the purpose of prostitution.
  • Men who do not rape but watch films that resemble rape or rape-like situations.
  • Men who do not rape but find the idea of rape sexually interesting.
  • Men who do not rape but routinely masturbate to pornography in which women are portrayed as objects whose only function is to provide sexual pleasure for men.
Conclusion
Policy of Zero Tolerance
A strategy that strives to address sexual abuse and exploitation in all of its manifestations is known as a "zero-tolerance" policy in situations of rape.Speedy and fair trail should be conducted by the courts and stringent punishment should be awarded as there should be no tolerance for heinous crimes like rape.
