Celebrating Same-Sex Marriage in Today's World
Political and emotional disputes between proponents and opponents of same-sex
unions have been going on for years. The legal and societal responses frequently
range from celebration to criminalization of the couple, despite the fact that
it has been governed by law and religion in many nations throughout the world.
Marriage Equality: The Value of Same-Sex Marriage
The Supreme Court of India issued a landmark decision in 2018 that was intended
to be recorded in the annals of the nation's history. Despite the majoritarian
prejudices against the LGBT population that are pervasive in India, the supreme
court repealed the harsh and antiquated Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.
This Section denigrated homosexuality and criminalized sexual activity that
violates the "laws of nature" in customarily evasive and diplomatic language.
The British Raj included it in the Indian Penal Code in 1861, and the Indian
judicial system needed 70 years after independence to repeal the legislation and
decriminalize homosexuality.
The campaigners who had campaigned for the cause for more than a decade,
battling with society and the courts to achieve equality in the eyes of the law,
reacted with elation to the historic ruling. Even though a marriage equality
essay is still a ways off in a time when it is acceptable to wed the person one
loves regardless of that person's gender identity or sexual orientation, the
Supreme Court's ruling foreshadows its eventuality.
Equality in Marriage
Fairness in Marriage:
The principle of marriage equality contends that all unions, regardless of
whether they are heterosexual, gay, or Sapphic, are equal and ought to have the
same privileges and position in society. We unfortunately learn from a young age
that only a man and woman can be united in matrimony due to the structure of our
society. And in the process, we ignore the vast majority of people who identify
with various sexual orientations and gender identities.
We are still in the early phases of moving toward inclusive society, where
people are treated equally regardless of their sexual orientation or gender,
even while the western world advances in this direction.
According to Pew Research Center data, support for same-sex marriage in nations
like the USA is now hovering at or over 60%. This information may be found by
searching for same-sex marriage essays or statistics. According to a poll
conducted in 2019 by Mood of the Nation (MOTN), India's percentage is a
depressing 18% if one were to look at the same figures.
Importance of Same-Sex Marriage
Proponents of an inclusive society have long disputed its significance in
same-gender marriage articles and discourses because no change is valued until
it benefits society in some way.
Since our nation is already overpopulated, encouraging marriage equality and a
rise in same-sex unions would slow down population growth. Orphan adoptions may
increase at the same time, which would be a big step towards a more inclusive
society.
Last but not least, it would signal a positive turn towards upholding the rules
governing human rights, which state that no person should have to endure
However, the seeds of bias already present in our society won't disappear
overnight. Our social structure and traditions differ greatly from those of
western countries. It may take decades or even centuries to change one's
thinking.
Nevertheless, the transformation must start somewhere. The foundation of that
transformation is the understanding that all people are created equal, and that
their preferences and decisions regarding whom they love and marry should not be
used as justification for discrimination.
