Pedro Alonso López
Pedro Alonso López was a very bad man. People called him “The Monster of the Andes.” He killed many people, probably more than 300 women and girls. He started doing bad things when he was only eight years old.
Life was hard for López. He was hurt and saw bad things happen when he was young. This made him very angry. He hurt people in Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador. He would look for young girls and pretend to be nice. Then, he would take them away and hurt them. He told someone he could see in their eyes when the sun went down that he would hurt them. He said it was good if it was dark.
The police in Colombia caught López after he killed two girls. People were going to hurt him because they were angry about what he did. But the police took him to jail. In 1979, they said he was “The Monster of the Andes.” They knew he tried to take a young girl in Ecuador too. He had already killed many people there. They found the bodies of more than 110 girls he killed in Ecuador, and maybe 240 more in Peru and Colombia. He got a short time in jail in Ecuador because the law was not very strong.
Later, in 1994, López got out of prison. But the police in Colombia were waiting for him because of another murder. He didn’t go to jail for that because they said he was crazy. They put him in a hospital for four years and then let him go. He was supposed to check in with the police every month, but he didn’t.
After that, nobody really knew where López was. In 2002, police thought he might be killing again because two new murders looked like his style. They looked for him, but they couldn’t find him.
What happened to Pedro Alonso López? Some people think he learned to control his bad feelings and lives quietly somewhere. Other people think that the families of the people he hurt finally found him and hurt him back. Or maybe, “The Monster of the Andes” is still out there, waiting to hurt people again.
